Replacing Wood Balusters With Metal: The Fastest Upgrade in the House

If your stair has the chunky white wood spindles every builder installed from 1995 to 2015, this is the upgrade that changes the whole entryway for the price of a weekend trip. Here is how it works.

Two ways to do it

Option 1: keep the handrail, replace the balusters. We cut out the wood spindles, drill the treads and the underside of the existing handrail, and set steel pickets. Fast, clean, and the most affordable. Works when the handrail is solid and you like it.

Option 2: replace the whole railing. New steel rail, pickets and posts, with or without a wood top rail. The right call when the handrail is loose, dated, or you want the modern horizontal-bar look.

What it costs

• Baluster swap only: roughly $40 to $70 per foot of railing, depending on picket style and spacing

A typical stair and upstairs landing in a two-story Cypress or Spring home is 25 to 40 feet of railing, so a baluster swap usually lands between $1,200 and $2,500.

Picket styles that sell houses

• Plain round or square black pickets: clean, timeless
• Single knuckle or twist: a little traditional detail
• Hollow square with a basket: the classic Texas look
• Flat bar horizontal: modern, needs a new rail

Does it meet code?

Yes, when spaced right. We keep gaps under 4 inches and anchor every picket top and bottom. If you have a loft or landing guardrail, we check the height while we are there.

How long does it take

A baluster swap on a standard stair is one day. Full railing replacement is a measure, about a week of shop time, then a one-day install.
