How to Keep a Steel Gate or Fence From Rusting in Houston Humidity
A fabricator's maintenance routine for iron gates and fences in the Gulf Coast climate: what to do twice a year, what to fix right away, and what to ignore.
Steel and Houston humidity are not natural friends, but a properly finished gate will outlive the house around it if you do three small things a year. Here is the routine we give every customer.
It starts with the finish
Rust prevention is mostly done before the gate leaves the shop. Every piece we build gets the welds ground, the mill scale cleaned, a rust-inhibiting primer, and a topcoat. Skip any of those and you get rust bleeding through in the first summer. If you are buying from someone else, ask exactly how they prep and prime.
Twice a year: rinse
Hose the gate and fence down in spring and fall. Pollen, dust and salt air (yes, even this far inland) hold moisture against the paint. A rinse and a soft brush on the low spots is enough.
Right away: touch up chips
Weed eaters, mowers and the trash truck chip paint at the bottom of pickets. A chip is a doorway for rust. Keep a small can of matching enamel and dab chips when you see them. Two minutes now saves a section replacement later.
Watch the bottom 6 inches
Rust almost always starts where the fence meets the ground: sprinkler spray, mulch piled against the pickets, grass clippings. Keep mulch and soil an inch below the bottom rail, and aim sprinkler heads away from the fence.
Hinges and latches
A drop of oil on hinges and the latch every few months keeps them moving and keeps water out. If a gate starts to sag, call before the hinge tears loose, that is a $250 to $350 repair instead of a new gate.
When rust shows up anyway
Surface rust on a small spot: sand to bare metal, prime, paint. Done. Rust that has eaten through a picket or the bottom rail: we cut the section out and weld in new steel. We do that kind of repair every week.
What about the rust look on purpose?
Some customers want the weathered patina you see on ranch gates. That is a controlled finish with a clear sealer on top, not neglect. We can do it, just ask.
