An automatic opener turns a nice gate into a gate you actually use. Around Houston, installing one runs roughly $1,500 to $3,000 for a residential swing gate, parts and labor, and more with a premium LiftMaster or FAAC operator. Slide gates and solar setups cost more. Here is how the money breaks down.
What is included in a typical install
- The operator (the motor and arm, or the chain drive for a slide gate)

Swing vs. slide
Swing openers are the most common and the least expensive. One arm per leaf. They need room for the gate to swing and a driveway that is roughly level at the gate.
Slide openers are the answer for steep driveways or tight entrances. The gate rolls sideways on a track or a cantilever. More steel, more hardware, so plan on $2,500 to $5,000 installed.
Solar or hardwired?
If power is within about 50 feet, hardwired is cheaper and more reliable. If the gate is at the end of a long driveway, a solar kit with a battery saves a long trench. Solar kits add $400 to $900 and want a spot with full sun most of the day.
Can you automate an existing gate?
Usually yes, as long as the gate is straight, the hinges are solid, and the posts are not leaning. A sagging gate will fight the motor and burn it out. We check the gate first and fix the hinge or post if needed, which is often a $250 to $350 repair.
